Cuttlefish Expedition
The CUTTLEBASE scientific team, led by Dr. Tessa Montague, has been studying the neural basis of dwarf cuttlefish (Sepia bandensis) camouflage in their lab at Columbia University, New York.
This time, they will study them in their natural habitat on this 10-day expedition to Anilao, Batangas, Philippines.
I applied the whole range of my photography skills working on this assignment. Aside from shots of the cuttlefish, I also had to take plates of underwater textures for their use in the lab (to stimulate cuttle camouflage), shoot wide-angle photos of the reef, photograph critters on blackwater dives, take documentary coverage of the fieldwork, and portraits of the team.
